About

Ed O'Meara recently retired from an Ontario municipal police service. He began his career in 1991 as a 911 call taker and police dispatcher at a PSAP. He took a myriad of calls, some of which he can still hear when he closes his eyes. One day he took a life altering call which knocked him out of the profession for several years. As a result of years of therapy he learned what a dispatcher needs and what works in order to build resiliency and to begin the healing process. In the latter part of his career he enrolled at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario where he is currently finishing his M.A. degree in counselling and spiritual care. He is currently interning under Dr Edward Murray. Any dispatchers wanting to see Ed O'Meara as their therapist can contact Dr Murray's office as all appointments will be under strict supervision while Ed interns. Upon graduation, Ed will be certified by the CRPO (College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario) and will practice as such as of May 2026).

Ed O'Meara is also a speaker who offers his story as inspiration and as a road map to those who are struggling as a result of mental injuries incurred in the line of duty as call takers and dispatchers. He knows what it's like to be the last human voice a person hears on this earth, he knows what it's like when an officer in the field screams for backup, calls a 10-78 and the closest unit is 5 minutes away which seems like 5 hours away. He knows what it's like when a pursuit goes south and innocent victims fall by the wayside. He's been there, and he can lend a hand when you find yourself there too.
